About Plus-Size Yoga

Plus-size yoga focuses on the needs of students in bigger bodies. This is not a weight-loss class: It’s a class for people who want to practice yoga in their bodies as they are. We adapt the poses to fit your body. There is no expectation that your body needs to change because you already have a yoga body!

We’ll focus on a) expanding the range of motion of the shoulder and hip joints, b) improving the mobility of the upper spine, c) stabilizing the lower back and knees by practicing mindful movement and by strengthening the surrounding muscles, and d) improving balance through gentle practice and strengthening the muscles of the feet and ankles.

Students are encouraged to move mindfully to identify habits of posture and movement that do and do not serve their bodies well. They will be encouraged to make decisions (with the teacher’s help) about which positions are safe and effective for them. Students always have the option to choose not to do a particular pose, and the teacher will offer suitable alternatives.

A typical class will include breathwork, movements that stretch muscles and improve joint mobility, and safe standing poses that develop balance and stability. Class will end with a restorative (resting) position that reinforces the focus of the class.

Wednesdays (FULL) 9:10 - 10:20 a.m. | May 1 - June 19 (8 weeks) | $160
Sundays (FULL) 12:05 - 1:20 p.m. | May 5 - June 23 (7 weeks) (no class on May 19) | $140

This class is ideal for students who

  • are new to yoga or prefer a gentler yoga practice

  • want to learn how to adapt yoga poses for the needs of a bigger body in order to increase comfort and receive maximum benefit from their yoga practice

  • have arthritis or injuries that prevent them from kneeling on the floor

This class is accessible to students who are unable to get down onto the floor. We offer the option of doing poses seated in a chair. The studio is located on the ground floor (no stairs). This class does not include kneeling positions. Typical poses include tree pose & supported standing forward folds. Variations are offered.

Wednesdays (FULL) 10:40 - 11:50 a.m. | May 1 - June 19 (8 weeks) | $160
Sundays (FULL) 10:30 - 11:45 a.m. | May 5 - June 23 (7 weeks) (no class on May 19) | $140

This class is ideal for students who

  • have taken at least one session of yoga classes

  • do not have an acute injury

  • want to build their yoga practice by exploring a wider range of poses

  • aim to gradually and safely develop endurance and strength

This class is accessible to students who are able to get down onto the floor and who are comfortable kneeling on the floor. Typical poses include triangle, pigeon, lunge, squat, and warrior. Variations are offered.

REFUND POLICY: To provide individualized attention and to build community, we keep class sizes small. Because your fee reserves your spot in the class for the session, registration fees are non-refundable.

MISSED CLASSES: Because your registration fee saves your spot in the class for the session, refunds and prorating are not available for missed classes. Because all of our classes tend to be full, we cannot offer make-up classes.
